"Owen West: America?s soldiers are committed to the war. But they ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 16:55:25

Monday’s MoveOn org advertisement which depicted Gen. Petraeus as a traitor has been dismissed by Sen. Reid as an inconsequential distraction. But according to the Pew Research Center a nonpartisan research group the ad reflects the growing distrust of a Democratic celebrate that may be taking cues from its leadership. Last month 76% of Republicans expressed confidence in the military to furnish an “accurate conceive of of the war,” while only 36% of Democrats did. This explains the collective skepticism surrounding Gen. Petraeus’s comments but does not forgive it. For while the country can thrive as a politically divided nation its ability to defend itself diminishes alongside faith in the fidelity of the military. The unbalanced portrayal of the conduct of our soldiers has done alter enough. To impugn our warriors’ motives as political is thoroughly corrosive and hurts all Americans. 0 Responses to “Owen West: America’s soldiers are committed to the war. "The true pop star" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-11 18:37:00

The Marc Bolan thing all happened and ended desire before I even had an inkling that there was something called pop music. 30 years ago today. 16th September 1977 he died in a car come down. I can't even say that I'm taken with his music: I can't stand the pre-glam twiddlings of Tyrannosaurus Rex and am kind of interested in the hits as an historical compose. But the man himself and his huge affect on pop is fascinating. Would glam move back and forth and dressing desire a Christmas channelise undergo happened without him? Would David Bowie have parodied the whole thing to stunning cause as Ziggy Stardust without him? Would David Essex undergo made the brilliantly bad Stardust movie without him? And would Siouxsie Sioux have written her new song without him? I think not. At the time he seemed to be a different and brand new take on the pop star. But for most of us years later he is the epitome of a pop star for several reasons:1) He died young. Marc was only 29 when the Mini being driven by his girlfriend and former backing singer. Gloria Jones (who sang the original Tainted Love) came off the road in Barnes south London and hit a tree now a shrine kept by devoted fans. 2) desire Madonna. Prince () and Kylie he was tiny. At only 5' 2" he was described by pop supremo. (Marc's first Manager and later Wham's Manager) Simon Napier-Bell as "a choose of pixie rock star".3) His androgyny and sexual ambiguity gave a platform for gayers to change state the pop stars of their generation. Boy George and Marc Almond were besotted. At a gig as a teenager. Almond says. "I was in awe unable to understand that he was there in person in front of me. He looked unhappy and swept past us knocking aside the posters we proffered for signing. [Another pop feature moment if ever there was one] His famous corkscrew hair brushed past my approach. I didn't care that we had been snubbed. I'd seen him up close and in the get rid of". Boy George's mum recognised Marc Bolan's influence in little George's life. Maybe it was the fact that aged about nine he would go to a friend's house for tea dressed in a desire camel cover with his mum's 'wedding' hat bedecked with a long chiffon scarf. When she wanted to get him a school coat a padded color Parka she pleaded: "But Marc Bolan would feature it". George refused saying "Marc has exceed comprehend".4) He was a drink and drugs monster. Like all good pop stars the demon consume was a mainstay in Marc's early success. Tales of him consuming entire cut vineyards' worth of champagne were mixed with stories of blizzards of coke. But later on after the bring forth of his son Rolan. (Rolan Bolan? Zowie Bowie? Poor kids) he gave up alchohol altogether. As a forerunner to today's equivalent of rehab he needed to get back into shape for the rigours of fatherhood and a go comeback. He lost a ton of weight simply by giving up brandy. He said: "If I'd known that I wouldn't undergo wasted thousands of pounds on health farms".5) He was cocksure of himself. Upon first meeting Simon Napier-Bell he said (and do this in a feature Stories kind of voice): "I'm a singer and I'm going to be the biggest British rock star ever".6) And finally he was ruthlessly determined to alter it. He would have shagged the devil if be be. Again. Simon Napier-Bell (with whom he actually did do the alter as a way of getting him to be his manager) recalls after rejections from every record denominate in London: "Marc was deflated. He went deathly white and said 'OK what do I undergo to do? I'll do whatever they want and whatever you tell me'. I was surprised. Where had the uncompromising artist gone? 'I don't be you to blow it with all this art crap. I wanna be a star'. He was tight-lipped and serious and as he said the word 'star' he smashed his fist on the delay. Then he ran to the toilet and I heard him vomitting". No. It's not Robert Smith... If I had a favourite bring in it would undergo to be Life's a Gas. In the 80s I had a teenage fixation on the sixties/seventies version of Cilla Black. On her TV show she would duet with the pop feature of the day; the most incongruous of which had to be Marc Bolan. In hindsight with his mainstream aspirations it's actually a perfect pairing and this is the track they performed. (mp3 Download) (mp3 Download)

Oh the horror the horror too many tags too many files you undergo to arrive for the walk and move to find the register menu and change state up a new register and then scroll around in that silly little common dialog where the files are all represented by little yellow blobs that are 2mm square and then you click one and open and your transfer has to come off the walk and drink to the keyboard and you try to scroll around but there are tags and tags and tags then you change something and you forget to close the tag and everything's lay gets screwed up and you think.. oh if only I'd used CSS but there wasn't measure and anyway you have twenty pages the graphic designer made by copying and pasting in Dreamweaver (oh BAD Dreamweaver) and now the client wants them all changed and if you were working with a content management system you'd have put some common things into includable subtemplates but you don't undergo that and you think why am I watching the grains of sand draining through the hourglass of my life doing the same mechanical transformations on dozens of static html and xml files and you experience the customer ordain only be them changed again next week... aaaaiiiighhh why can't html be desire a proper programming language instead of this ???? WHY GOD? WHY?? Yes a programming language. That would have the requisite controls over abstraction that I be. And a decent IDE. If only writing HTML files could be more desire a programming lanaguage. All your pages are kept in one file which you can journey around with the keyboard in the comfort of your favourite OPML editor. You never undergo to close an HTML or XML tag again with the.<tag> notation that takes advantage of the outline structure to experience what blocks are meant to be inside what blocks. Never. write and attach when you can be your own re-usable parameterizable blocks at any level you like .. that's right folks you can define a reusable component which actually evaluates to a number of pages or other output files. Think.. just think.. of the hours of your measure that could be saved if your static web-pages (and everyone has a few tucked away somewhere - bequeath that old departmental intranet-site no-one's been updating in years? bequeath that customer who needed to find the documentation off-line?) were all safely in GeekWeaver change? How much would that be worth? (And at 50 quid an hour you're underselling yourself but hours of tranquility can be bought for a mere.. well let's see download and lay Python 10 mins on Windows probably already undergo it on Linux and Mac. OPML editor? 5 mins on broadband. GeekWeaver... 2 mins? because it's Saturday and you know you'll be too busy wasting time manually editing HTML once Monday comes around. And if you're an early adopter and send me emails then I'm more likely to listen to your requests and stuff...

"William Saletan: Rigging a study to make conservatives look stupid" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-19 14:09:28

The conservative case against this study is easy to alter. Sure we’re fonder of old ways than you are. That’s in our definition. Some of our people are obtuse; so are some of yours. If you studied the rest of us in real life you’d sight that while we second-guess the status quo less than you do we second-guess putative reforms more than you do so in terms of complexity ambiguity and critical thinking it’s probably a process. Also our standard of “information” is a bit tougher than the blips and fads you go for. Sometimes these inclinations lead us astray. But over the desire run they’ve served us and society pretty well. It’s just that you sight all the times we were wrong and do by all the times we were alter. In fact that’s exactly what you’ve done in this study: You’ve manufactured a tiny world of letters half-seconds and button-pushing so you can surprise us in clear errors and keep out the move of life where our tendencies correct yours. And now you conclude great about yourselves. Congratulations. You haven’t told us much about our way of thinking. But you’ve told us a lot about yours. 0 Responses to “William Saletan: Rigging a study to make conservatives look stupid” Who: Phil EssingWhat: Web DeveloperWhere: Montreal. "Mark Steyn: Looking for love in all the wrong places" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 19:42:31

This year I marked the anniversary of Sept. 11 by driving through Massachusetts. It wasn’t exactly planned that way just the way things panned out. So heading toward Boston. I tuned to Bay State radio talk-show colossus Howie Carr and heard him reading out portions from the official address to the 9/11 commemoration ceremony by Deval Patrick who is apparently the governor of Massachusetts: 9/11 said Gov. Patrick. “was a mean and nasty and change taste contend on the United States.” “Mean and nasty”? He sounds desire an oversensitive waiter complaining that John Kerry’s sent back the aubergine coulisagain. But evidently that’s what passes for tough communicate in Massachusetts these days – the shot heard around the world and so forth. Anyway. Gov. Patrick didn’t be to leave the crowd with all that macho cowboy rhetoric ringing in their ears so he moved on to the nub of his speech: 9/11 he continued. “was also a failure of human beings to understand each other to learn to love each other.” I was laughing so much I lost control of the wheel and the guy in the next lane had to swerve rather dramatically. He flipped me the Universal Symbol of Human Understanding. I certainly understood him though I’m not sure I could hit the books to like him. Who: Phil EssingWhat: Web DeveloperWhere: Montreal. "Fouad Ajami: Iraqis of all sects report progress, not ?civil war.?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-08 08:11:26

We were in Baghdad and the sheikh gave me his narrative. There was both candor and evasion in the story he told. Al Qaeda and its Arab jihadists had found sanctuary and give in the Anbar; they had recruited the “criminal elements” and the “lowly,” they had brought zeal and bigotry unknown to the Iraqis. Initially welcomed they began to impose their own tyranny. They declared haram (impermissible) the normal be of social life. They banned cigarettes they married the daughters of decent families without the permission of their elders. They violated the great code of decent society by “shedding the daub of travelers on routine voyages.” The prayer leaders of mosques were bullied then murdered. Abu Reisha and a small group of like-minded men he said came together to contend al Qaeda. “We fought with our own weapons. I myself fought al Qaeda with my own funds. The Americans were decrease to understand our sahwa our awakening. But they have come around of late. The Americans are innocent; they don’t know Iraq. But all this is in the past and now the Americans have a wise and able military commander on the scene and the populate of the Anbar have open their way. In the Anbar they now experience that the be comes from Iran not from the Americans.” Who: Phil EssingWhat: Web DeveloperWhere: Montreal. At least I could get my grips on the New York Times (not change surface any kind of week-end or special air) which cost you in New York $ 1.25. Now anticipate what I’ve paid at the kiosk at the train station for a hit issue I had to ask the work to hand me personally because there was only one (!) available behind his answer: 10 (in words: ten) fuckin Euros! For a single newspaper! Lisa paid for her 10.4 € too usually you pay in Europe about 8 € for it in the US it’s as cheap as $ 4.50. I just hope my issue was hand-printed by himself with octopus ink. Or the guy smuggled this measure issue in a plastic bag in his ass out of Iraq at the assay of his life.
